My computer has unilaterally decided to stop working today... so I
cannot make new darcs patches until I manage to fix it...

In the meanwhile: there's some "easy" way to do conditional
compilation on bytestring version without posing further hurdle on the
building process?

There's another way: substitute BL.readFile with BL.hGetContents,
followed by a file close (after the final strictification we should
not need the file opened anymore). What do you think?
