Thanks to twb for this. Although I haven't had problems with echo -n, he 
mentioned that it was not portable.

The modified test certainly fails with the stack overflow for darcs 2.0.0 
(unknown) which is the darcs that I have installed for ordinary use on the 
PPC Mac that I usually use for these things. I am not sure, actually, that I 
have a darcs 2.1.0 readily available, but just say the word, then I'll 
arrange to get one. (I'll be gone for a few hours now, but will be back 
later.)
