That would be interesting indeed -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Donald Klopper Sent: 02 September 2008 09:58 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [email protected] Subject: [DarknDirty] Re: I have to ask: 29ers vs 26" MTB's Thanks Gerard Interesting that according to some the 29ers are supposed to offer hill climbing improvements. Horses for courses. Literally. The total weight penalty should be in the region of 2 pounds (heavier frame, heavier wheels, longer spokes, larger diameter rubber). My ideal 29er would be stretched in all dimensions - thicker spokes (I just managed to break some unbreakable bladed spokes on my new Mavic Crosstrails ... :-(( ), - fatter rubber (maybe even more than 2.3"), - thicker frame tubing (never a bad idea), - fatter fork stanchions ('cause they're longer!), - wider rims (to reduce flex as well), - beefier hubs (with 29" wheels there's bound to be a lot of stresses here, especially with us clydesdales), - longer beefier cranks (hey my legs are longer too...). Basically the whole bike "zoomed in" by around 10% except for stuff like the drivetrain, seatpost and handlebars, brakes, shifters. OK maybe bigger disks. That'll be nice. So even the travel would increase. To 150mm in front, 5.5" at the back. Which sounds like AM, but it's actually XC dimensions considering the bike size. All that will cause the bike to be quite a bit heavier, probably more than 10% heavier. So on my current 13.5kg rig, add say 1.5 kg, I'm back at 15kg. But that'll be almost a DH'able machine, at only 33 pounds... Ouch I don't think it'll climb particularly well on the smooth stuff but it sure would fly downhill and on the flats... OK I'll shut up now. Apparently more effort to get up the hills, but the benefits from more rolling momentum on the rest was evident.
