Well first of all without making some changes to the structure, the
current situation is chaos, as the document is not valid. To see it for
your self run the following

xmllint --xinclude --noout --postvalid darktable.xml

It is just luck that the pdf output is generated from this garbage.

Well docbook is almost industry standard and from the simple markup
html, man page, epub, pdf are doable. And if one wants to go to the
extreme even using  latex backend (dblatex) is possible

I understand the concern about 1.2 on the doorway, but with current way
of editing and structure nothing that sort is doable.

Hence I am slowing down on fixing the docbook sources and fixing xsl
stylesheets.
