Personally, when doing the proofreading, I found the dual column layout nice. First, having the image adjacent to the text decreases the chance that the image a text refers to is split onto the next page. Second, the text is frequently short enough that it would end up on a single line if it spanned the entire page. That would lead to a fairly significant increase in vertical whitespace (single line of text, followed by an image, repeated ad nauseum), for no discernable benefit.
