As far as I can see most of the images in the two-column display are screenshots. They come with a rather low resolution. Magnifying them to span the whole width of a page would make them look ugly. Even with the current width they don't look to nice IMHO. Alternatively if we would let them stand centered in their original size with no text left or right, we'd waste quite some space.
