I can understand why there is concern for having too many modules. I have the module I want written and working now. I'll upload some examples somewhere, of what it does.
It's very simple, just a layer of a single color. (and I think eventually, layering a 2nd image as well) Perhaps another option to the colorize module to preform this function would work better?
