So I'm thinking this is something hardware related. I plugged the hard drive into my desktop and booted it into a virtual machine, and I've run the exports dozens of times and it has yet to crash. I stuck it back into the laptop to verify and yes it did crash. It would not surprise me if the hardware in question is unstable, but this is the strangest instability I've seen -- it seg faults randomly, but when it does it is in the same function every time.
