That's somehow a relief to know that custom basecurves isn't going to solve the dynamic range problem. Helpful for now to just accumulate knowledge about what works... The levels solution does seems good, and simple. Though it helps to set a "lightness" blend, or else the colors come out oversaturated?
Certainly all these solutions are some combination of upping the exposure then compressing the highlights. It might be overkill but appealing to invent an iop to do this as early as possible in the processing pipeline, perhaps even before the exposure module. But interesting that the modules which seem to work (levels/zonesystem/globaltonemap) come much later, and work in Lab space. It sounds as though other cameras have a similar dynamic range modes which are not supported in Darktable after careful developer consideration, hence Fuji dynamic range support could easily meet a similar fate...?
