Definitely, and *is* configurable.

Not completely following your logic but I frequently crop images
differently using "duplicate" and get:

140927_101652_dsf_3691_dt.jpg
140927_101652_dsf_3691_dt_01.jpg
140927_101652_dsf_3691.nef
140927_101652_dsf_3691.nef.xmp
140927_101652_dsf_3691_01.nef.xmp

the jpgs exported are related by filename to the xmp files and to the
original nef.

fwiw: the functionality is as "I expect" it to be.

It really appears to me that you have not properly configured the export
feature.  Or, I completely do not understand.
