That's why I proposed a $(VERSION) variable for export that contains the image 
version (as shown in the image info lib on the left side), that would allow 
you to have whatever naming scheme you want.

No. Let me quote the exiv2 page (I guess they get these descriptions from the 
original specs, I was too lazy to look that up):

"A reference to the original document from which this one is derived."

The original document is and will always be the raw file. Not some XMP that 
probably doesn't even exist because the user disabled writing of those. Same 
with darktable-cli: what if the user has one generic XMP with his default 
processing and exports a JPEG of every raw file with that XMP? Should 
darktable-cli put that XMP filename into all JPEGs? Quite useless.

The only sane approach is to follow the specs and reference the raw file in 
DerivedFrom.
