After some discussions on IRC on this topic we would like to ask you to do a quick test: Change the font sizes in darktable.gtkrc to 8 (or just use the attached one). Does that make fonts and icons similarly sized? If the answer is yes then please try setting your screen's real DPI in your darktablerc (key screen_dpi_overwrite, defaulting to -1.0). Does that help?
