Good question!
It shows the 3 stars in DT (where the rating was done), but when I click
on the CR2 file in XNViewMP, it shows an XMP Rating of 0, but I cannot
find any EXIF Rating information - still the file is shown with 3 stars.
The corresponding sidecar file contains 'xmp:Rating="3"' (so this is
where XNViewMP take it's rating from).

I just checked an older RAW file that was rated using some older DT
version. It looks the same (correct Rating in XMP sidecar file, but
zero-Rating in the RAW's XMP data which is it's only XMP field).

So I made a new photo with the EOS 5D Mk III and downloaded it manually
to my computer (not using Rapid Photo Downloader as I usually do to
avoid any changes to the file). This RAW file already contains the
XMP-Rating 0 as it's only XMP field.

I made another photo and used the camera's rating feature to appoint 2
stars. As expected this value is written to the RAW's XMP rating field.
When opening this RAW in DT, the 2 star rating is shown correctly.
I changed this image's rating in DT to 3 stars, which is written to the
XMP sidecar file, but not to the RAW (which is the expected behaviour,
since DT promises not to make any changes to the RAW files).

My guess is that during jpeg export, the XMP rating inside the RAW file
accidently takes precedence over the one in the XMP sidecar file.
Did someone add some code to copy all the RAW's XMP fields into the
jpeg, *after* DT's meta data has been written?
It smells like this kind of thing ;-)
