Sorry but I find the discussion quite confused! The above sentence is also
true for AMD as the current OpenSource driver don't have support for "Image
Support", so the only way to get OpenCL working with AMD is to use the
proprietary driver.

And this is the issue with AMD, the proprietary driver won't work on some
kernel, is only supported on Unbutu (see the thread about the way to hack
this by installing libraries manually) and works only for a limited set of
AMD cards.

That's quite a lot of limitation whereas the NVIDIA proprietary driver
works fine in lot more context and come with a nice dkms module which
follows kernel update.
