I just went through the exercise of building a new PC, and found that this
article helped immensely (it does benchmarks with darktable on linux, with
various GPU, and compares against a really fast CPU as well):

The GPU actually helps a _lot_, especially with respect to Linux OpenCL
performance. I ended up getting an RX 460 4GB (I think vram does make a big
difference for photo processing, but am not 100% sure).

However, audio over DisplayPort doesn't work with the AMD driver, so YMMV.
