For desktop work, the Nvidia open source (nouveau) driver also works out of 
the box. But that's hardly relevant to the current issue of openCL with 
darktable.

As soon as I need more advanced properties of the card, I have to use the 
proprietary driver. And that seems to hold for both brands.
