Hello Bill,
you basically found the issue.
Instead of exiv2 I now used exiftool to check the exif info. And indeed there
is a difference with the Artist field.
Canon 6D:
The RAW shows
Artist : M. Bodenbinder
The xmp file contains
<dc:creator>
</dc:creator>
The GUI shows value "M. Bodenbinder"
Canon 20D:
no Artist in the RAW
The xmp file contains
<dc:creator>
</dc:creator>
The GUI says value "unknown"
Canon G9XII:
The RAW shows
Artist :
The xmp file contains no creator.
The GUI value for the creator is empty
Now it makes more sense what the GUI is showing.
The only question remaining is why the xmp file for the G9XII RAW does not
contain a <dc:creator> section. From the logic above it should contain at
least an empty section.
