OK, so... I indeed use saturation.

Not exactly the way it is described in 
https://www.darktable.org/usermanual/fr/red_eyes.html 3.5.4.3-1 but, yes, this 
is what I was doing.

I will try 3.5.4.3-2 as soon as my computer... etc.

I would suggest using a circular mask in conjunction with the mixer or some 
other module to reduce the saturation.
That way you can just modify the problem eyes.
