For eyes with dark iris, I currently reduce the red in a drawn mask from the
channel mixer and substract.

It is not a problem with the iris but with the pupil.
The iris is the coloured part of the eye and it is (pretty) not affected by the
red eyes problem.
The red eye is a reflection of the light passing through the pupil and reaching
the retina. The retina has many capillary vessels and what is red is the blood
in these capilaries under a strong direct light.

Yes, of course, I know this all.
I have no problem with red-eyes removal in general.
Only with such subjects whose pupil is clearer than usual.
And those have clear iris too. At least those who I photographed.
