I'd be perfectly happy to get rid of the database and use sidecar
files exclusively at least as an option. I prefer a different tool
for managing my image collection (KPhotoAlbum) and just use dt for
image processing.

Invoking dt on a collection of files living in different directories
is a pain. If, for exmaple, I run "darktable */img_*94.cr2"

101canon/img_0194.cr2
102canon/img_0294.cr2
104canon/img_0494.cr2
105canon/img_0594.cr2
106canon/img_0694.cr2
107canon/img_0794.cr2
108canon/img_0894.cr2
...

my light table shows only one photo at a time, but with lots of
different film rolls. The "film roll" metaphor isn't how I work -- I
store the images on disk in camera layout and use KPhotoAlbum
organization functionality to manage it all). So collecting a bunch
of images in KPhotoAlbum and having that invoke darktable on the
result isn't very useful (RawTherapee is even worse; it shows _only_
the first image or directory on the command line).
