You don't say, but one way I can read the above is that you are downloading from
the Sony to the computer via a USB cable from the camera's USB port to the
computer's USB port. I presume that somehow this connection 'recognises' the
camera and you have that set up to trigger DT. You don't say any of this
clearly so I'm filling in the gaps based on my own experience. I may be wrong,
but 'debugging by email' requires a lot of clarification of detail as we are not
looking over your shoulder seeing what you are doing: we only know what you tell
us and if you don't say otherwise we have to make assumptions to fill in the
blanks.

I tried that once with my Sony DSLR and it worked, slowly, and sucked the
batteries.
I was far from happy with that procedure.

Now I extract the card, use a card reader to copy the files into the computer
and run DT on the files there.

It's a simple process, easier to automate.

The uploading has nothing to do with the lens profile.

Now if I've misinterpreted what you were saying, please try explain again what
the situation and problem is.
More context, please, context is everything.

openSUSE Linux with kernel 4.18.8
Darktable 2.4.0
glibc2 2.22-19.1

What are you running? Please give context & method clearly

As far as lenses go, the whole matter of the "lensfun", its database,
calibrating your lens and more has been discussed repeatedly on this list.
There's also the Blog page:
https://www.darktable.org/2015/02/on-lens-detection-and-correction/

But please refer to the archives or to the manual pages:

If you are not running Linux, the pages can be accessed on the 'Net.
Go Google.
