you apparently *only* deleted the photo file and not the db entry within
darktable.  dt does not rescan directories to see if file have been moved
or deleted or renamed.

use darktable to delete the file rather than some other app.  this way dt
removes the file from it's database and the cache.

to correct your current situation, tell/use dt to remove the image.


ps: I didn't trim your quotes as you don't feel it necessary.
