I'm not a programmer but I am wondering if it would be possible to write a lua script that adds sharpening via image magick to the export options of darktable...

The developers of both Darktable and Rawtherapee do such a great job. I would
love to see a collaboration called Darktherapee. There are just so many great
features in both. What stands out for me in Darktable is the ability to do
multiple instances and the use of masks to localise adjustments. Rawtherapee
has fantastic options with curves, noise reduction and sharpening.

Cheers

That's exactly that image magick is ment for: write a bash script with:

for file in *.jpg
do
     #write image magick comands here
done

and all is done automatically without any hand work for you ...

Using imagemagick is not an option for me because I usually have to
process lots of images.

3. Use imagemagick for resize and sharpening (the resize must come
first, IM process in the exact order of the command line, so sharpening
is the last instruction set). I have a set of script that output jpegs
and then I run

convert <infile.jpg> -sampling-factor 4:2:0 -strip -quality 85
-interlace Plane -colorspace RGB --resize 900x900 -sharpen 8x2.0
<outfile-s8-20.jpg>

convert <infile.jpg> -sampling-factor 4:2:0 -strip -quality 85
-interlace Plane -colorspace RGB --resize 900x900 -sharpen 7x2.0
<outfile-s7-20.jpg>

all the way to

convert <infile.jpg> -sampling-factor 4:2:0 -strip -quality 85
-interlace Plane -colorspace RGB --resize 900x900 -sharpen 1x2.0
<outfile-s1-20.jpg>
