[darktable-user] Presets act like 'postsets' - so what am I doing wrong?

I have defined a preset and enabled the 'auto apply this preset to 
matching images'. I find that the 'auto' part works only when I select 
the list of presets for that module and click on the specific preset 
that I have defined: i.e. I have to apply the 'auto' part manually. This 
applies no matter how 'wide' I set the parameters for the preset. What 
am I failing to understand ?
