And the answer is that converting text to a path did the trick, once I figured out how to do the job. :-P  Patience is NOT my strong card.  A big "Thank you" to Guillermo for pointing me in the right direction.

Have you tried converting the fonts to paths before exporting de SVG? That should eliminate the font problem (I'm assuming the text is not a variable that darktable needs to replace).
