I would *guess* you have something amiss in your library.db or
darktablerc7, re: deleted ~/.config/darktable

but your original xmp still causes problems, so your ~/.config/darktable 
is probably ok and the darktablerc. either your xmp is borked or you have 
some modules out-of-order that darktable cannot read/apply correctly.

I would throw away your original xmp, removed the image from your
collection, reimport and re-edit to suit your tastes and forget this. you 
did indicate that the original xmp was the problem.
