I was using libavif-0.8.1 on Ubuntu 20.04 with Darktable 3.2.1, and no success. When I attempt to export as AV1F, it seems to be working, but then fails at what seems to be the very end.
This lends credence to what Remco said, that it is failing during the writing of the metadata, and that the problem may lie with EXIV2. I really never bothered to troubleshoot it. I just thought I would wait until libavif improved. I suppose I was waiting for the wrong thing to improve.
