Thank you Remco and Karim for your input.

As it seems to be an EXIV2 issue and not darktables, I'll update the github issue with your this info and close the issue.

I will however continue investing and try to resolve the issue.

I have 18000 TIFFs waiting to be converted to AVIF. I refuse to create new jpegs (technology of 1992) in 2020. I'll just use up more diskspace until this issue is resolved :-)

Thanks again.

Best,

Alejandro Criado-Pérez

I was using libavif-0.8.1 on Ubuntu 20.04 with Darktable 3.2.1, and no success. When I attempt to export as AV1F, it seems to be working, but then fails at what seems to be the very end.

This lends credence to what Remco said, that it is failing during the writing of the metadata, and that the problem may lie with EXIV2. I really never bothered to troubleshoot it. I just thought I would wait until libavif improved. I suppose I was waiting for the wrong thing to improve.
