Is there an option in DT to "explore" system files and folders, opening
only the desired images?
Without having to import, but simply having a browser inside the program?
The current management that foresees a compulsory importation of "files or
folders" is a reason for refusal to use the software for all those who do
not want to have internal db in the editing programs.
Thanks

Please note that darktable - like all RAW editors - works non-destructive.
See this paper at
https://web.archive.org/web/20140912051214/http://www.adobe.com/digitalimag/pdfs/non_destructive_imaging.pdf
That means: the edits have to be stored somewhere.
darktable stores them within a database for speed reasons - and also in
.xmps for interoperability.
If you don't want this - I fear this is not the right choice for you.
You might have a look at Lightzone e. g., this is browser-only ... and
slow and tries to compensate this by storing .jpgs instead of .xmps with
every image.
