in the lighttable view all imported files are shown. You can also import png files - they will be displayed. Keep in mind that lighttable isn't a real time view onto your diskdrive, so unless you reimport your directory after exporting png files there these won't appear in lighttable view. You can use lua to generate a export, import, group with raw file afterwards script to achieve this (there's reusable code in https://github.com/darktable-org/lua-scripts/blob/master/contrib/gimp.lua)
