Yes, exactly. This also affects the focal length of zoom lenses, which
clearly makes a difference for lens correction.

My use case: I have a few lenses which are not detected properly, and
it's clear why. Some Sigma and Tamron lenses are definitely
indistinguishable in my exif data (except for some text attribute). Ok,
fine, since I do not own all these "equal" lenses, I'd like to have a
preset that matches certain parameters, and applies the lens correction
for the lens that I own.

But this does not work properly, because the preset remembers all
parameters of the module, and applies them, including e.g. focal length.

It would be great to have a mechanism that somehow restricts the
parameters in a preset, and leaves the rest as automatic as if you
switch on the module manually. I think I remember this also helped for
other "auto" settings in some "levels" module, or so.

Yes, this would add even more complexity, and I imagine it's not so easy
to simply add such a feature. So no worries, darktable is still a great
tool!
