Oh, really! What type of monitor do you have? I know that there are some
monitors which have a light sensor on front panel to adjust background
illumination (on my Eizo it's called "Auto EcoView"). Eizo allows to
switch that off - and of course I did.

Even worse would be an auto-adjustment of contrast. Monitor contrast is
typically changed by applying a gamma curve. With a random monitor gamma
you will in fact have absolutely no control on the lightness impression
of an image, unfortunately.
