trying to be more specific here... You can have more than 4G of ram on a 32 bit system, but any single application won't be able to use more than 4G at a time. Adding swap won't help, it's a limitation to how much address space a 32bit machine has
DT will gladly use more than that if it can So I would strongly advise having a 64bit machine and a 64 bit distribution. Nowdays I don't think you can easily find a 32bit machine and I have been using an all 64bit linux for years without thinking about it. So definitely go 64bit there is no reason not to, even if you have less than 4G ram (which would suprise me) I am less an expoert on GPU choices, but I would strongly advise looking into OpenCL support of your video card in linux. OpenCL allows DT to offload image processing to the video card which is much faster than any CPU you might have.
