I think one important point as already noted is the graphic card to run with opencl mode. You need in this case at least 1gb of RAM in the graphic card.I I have myself only 512Mb and even if it is possible to tweak dt to run with opencl in this case it does not work properly.
So be sure to go for at least 1Gb of RAM in your graphic card. My notebook is 2.4ghz and it can render D300 (12 mpix) image instantaneously and I have only a slight delay (~ 2s) with my D800 (36 mpix) images.
