The OPs point surely is, that this is a very weak and loose coupling and
in an /archival/ context one would definitely avoid something like that.
Especially if it is so easily achievable cause the format to be archived
allows for embedding. Just consider that you keep your XMP and our NEF,
but the file names are not unique... Even if you keep them unique on
your system some migratory step might throw them togesther with other
files and break that uniqueness, as there is no ID system that preserves
it. So the file name is just no good thing, and it's the only coupling
between the metadata and your image. Now in my book metadata and image
are equally important as I can't find an image again if I don't have
metadata. So there is surely a source of trouble here.
Anyway, you have your point and I even understand that you don't want to
write to raw. I even buy into that, at least to a certain extent.
A suggestion, to make both worlds happy, however, would be to allow an
/export/ to, say, DNG with embedded metadata. Embedding of metadata is
in the format definition of DNG and if it's treated as an /export/ you
should also be happy as you do not to write to the raw. If someone now
throws away her NEFs in favour of those DNGs, well, it's just not your
cup of tea ;) It even serves a another idea, ie. that you want to
condense sort of a result at some point. In fact from an /archival/
perspective it is a bit difficult, to say the least, that I can actually
destroy the work to an image by a silly mouse click in darkroom.
Especially, in a non-repeatable way.
