Hi Tac,

Think of brushes as just a (usually fairly clumsy) way of solving the real
problem which is that you want different areas or colours or textures or
whatever to be exposed or otherwise processed differently.

Fundamental to using dt effectively is to get to know the 'blend if' generic
functionality available to pretty much all processing functions. For your
exposure requirement we could therefore pick any of the tools that work on
exposure, e.g. perhaps the ND grad filter and first apply that to the image as
a whole. If we then want that filter effect applied selectively to different
areas of the image rather than having to draw a mask the areas can be selected
via 'blend if' parameters using whatever characteristic distinguishes best
between wanted and unwanted areas e.g. brightness, hue, colour etc.

That said mask drawing is available right now in the unstable branch. It seems
to work fine but the key usage and mechanics are a bit confusing/undocumented
and at times frustrating - which is why its not yet in the proper stable branch
I guess :-)

Good luck,
Rob.

Subject: [Darktable-users] Brushing Exposure

In Lightroom, there's a way to grab a brush and "paint" exposure variations.
Is there a way to do that in Darktable? I feel like there must be, but I'm
missing something simple, like how to draw and polygon around an area to work
with it.

Any guidance for beginners? I'm no expert at Lightroom either, but I'm at a
photo workshop and everyone else is using Lightroom.

Thanks!

Tac
