I have seen this thread for quite long time. I'm sure the developers
will improve Darktable related to tagging.
I came from Adobe Lightroom 3 and solved this by using Darktable purly
as a rawdeveloper and had 200-300
tags and needed something fast and easy.
The only open source program which worked nice with tagging and metadata
management is Digikam.
So my workflow is now:
a) Import and rename images with Digikam.
b) Remove uneeded pictures with Digikam.
c) Use Darktable or Rawtherapee to make jpg images.
d) Tag the jpg images and change the metadata in Digikam.
e) Export images to external images services.
f) Move images from the computer to an external drive/server image library.
It's two reason I like Digikam:
1) No extra level of abstration (like AcdSee). I images are show where
they are in the real worlds in files and directories.
2) It have a fast database and can do everything related to metadata
management and image search.

Substring search, yes, please. I also use quite a deep tagging tree,
so that would make my life soo much nicer.

Absolutely. It is one of the biggest issues I have with dt. I have
considered changing away from dt for that reason.
