I do this right now as well, but I have to say, that due to the database 
approach incorporating dt as a pure developer isn't that nicely done. 
Plus, it acually could do so much more. I really like the db-approach

Being ignorant of digikam (needs such a large runtime) I still vote for 
mapivi these days. It needs my images as jpg, but for some preservation 
issue I go to jpg anyway.

Actually, I like to have both. I like dt's approach here. I could select 
on a folder basis but I don't need to use a folder.

Once I got my metadata assingned I again like dt here. Just assignment 
currently has quite some room for improvement, unfortunately. Tried it 
again from time to time and always revert back to mapivi's slicker, 
faster interface. Even wrote a small tool to export metadata from 
iptc->dt-suitable xmps to ingest everything to dt once and check some 
stuff there, but well, "not yet".
