This thread gets long I still hope that some motivation
might arise. However, I even understand their point. In a
spare time project it's hard to code something you don't

That's the problem I face. I do not really have a good
combined tool yet.
I never used the commercial stuff as I don't have either
runtime (pure Linux here for ump, when I finally left
OS/2...) So I can't comment on <place something here>.
At the moment I use dt for raw and mapivi based on jpg with
raw attachements for metadata. On my level of need mapivi
keeping the IPTC with the ability to copy fields to xmp is
ok. It lacks some of the IPTC vocabularies but this is ok
for my useage. But I'd love to combine those two and at the
moment I feel dt has the largest potential here.
