That is very strange indeed. I use a 7D as well and I find the Canon base curve 
to be quite OK. When I started using Darktable I shot a few RAW+JPEG and 
created a history stack that pretty much resembles the in-camera JPEG.

Saving and automagically applying that stack to multiple photos is a different 
story though, but many including me have complained often enough in other 
threads ;)

Note that you can also develop a JPEG from RAW within the camera at a later 
point, there's such function in the camera menu.
