No, this has been done in the Four-Third system for many years.
There, it is even part of the specification.  And the Four-Third
system is neither high-end nor exotic.  If I wanted to work on this,
I would start with investigating support for the Four-Thirds.
Probably best documented, and wide-spread.

White balance is already read and used by DT, isn't it?
