This is my error message:

Unable to detect the URI-scheme of "mailto:?subject=images%20exported%20from%20darktable&body=DSCF0198.jpg%201/160%20f/11.0%2023mm%20iso%20400&attach=/home/david/.local/tmp/DSCF0198.jpg";.

And I did this running dt from the terminal.

Interesting that 'xdg-mail' is not on my system .... was dt supposed to load it during installation??

How is this supposed to work? When I tried it it just created a set of files in ~/.local/tmp - is it supposed to actually transmit an email (I wasn't asked for an address)? Or do I need to run some kind of script? The manual doesn't mention send as email at all (at least, not in lighttable - export selected section).

It's supposed to export the image(s) selected in light table and add them as attachment in your default email client.
In Linux it uses xdg-email.

Try running darktable in a terminal, repeat the export and see if you get some information. Which operating system are you running?
