Hi,

I would like to challenge your assumption that this is database related. 
It more sounds like darktable is busy generating thumbnails for a huge 
number of images in your collection.

You could test by starting with '-d perf' and see if a lot of pixelpipe 
processing takes place while you are in lighttable mode.
