This is about to be improved in Darktable.

I would definitely issue a bug report against exiv2. But first,
look thoroughly whether there is already one. If not, tell them the
full and exact lens model name, and upload a pristine JPEG from the
camera, as small as possible.

You can write a script that replaces the lens model name the XMP
files. You have to switch off compression of long entries in XMP
files, and detection of updated XMP files (both in the settings of
Darktable). I *think* that the lens model name is then included as
a hexdump in one history_params entry (which one is in
history_operation).

Maybe I overlook something, but I toy with the idea of issuing a
feature request of a text file
~/.config/darktable/lens_name_mapping: If Darktable finds lens model
X, it replaces it with lens model Y (empty strings allowed). It
seems to be a very simple and robust ad-hoc solution to me.

Tschö,
Torsten.
