I see no problem either, although I do it differently.

I just copy the files from my SD card reader to wherever I want them and then 
import that folder into dt.  I don't trust dt, or RPD, or any other photo 
utility except the o/s to do the actual copy of files from card to hard disk 
but that's just me. There probably are reliable downloaders out there, but I 
don't see why I should take the time to evaluate, choose and test one for 
reliability when there's no need for such a thing in the first place.

I am not really sure what others see as a problem. I am importing directly
(USB) from the camera and simply specify in the Preferences/Session Options 
where I want the images to be placed on my hd and how they should be numbered.
It simply works! It also works if I import from the SD card with a USB adapter. 
Since dt displays image thumbnails alongside the file name, it makes it easy to 
be selective if needed.

I have never lost any material through this process. Nice feature!
