your data is in xmp as a backup and to allow transferring it along with the
file easily. the database is our primary source of data, and used for fast
access (the collect module allows you to do fancy things based on metadata,
which would be atrociously slow if we would need to open all the xmp for
this).
you can sync the xmp data on startup with a crawler thread (which you can
enable in your preferences), in case you're doing crazy things to your xmp
outside dt (load with other application, use sed, etc).
