Is perhaps the cropped size smaller than the display size as in
full-screen the image defaults to display 100% of the image or fit-screen
if larger than display screen

More than likely a problem on *your* system.  I do not have that problem
on openSUSE Tumbleweed and have not heard here of it.  Check the
permissions of those directories you cannot see.

iianm, the db files are not compatable, ie: you may upgrade but cannot go
back using the same library.db

did you remove ~/.config/darktable and ~/.cache/darktable
