The only problem left is the unability to use file/directory chooser dialog, right? I'm not exactly sure what you are doing that it fails. Over here it looks like this - there is places with homedir and root directory, you for example click on homedir and its contents appear on the right. Then you can double-click Pictures directory there and click open button at the bottom of the dialog window. You also can use keyboard to achieve the same result (Tab, Enter, arrow keys).
