Works fine over here, that's why I described exact steps for you to
compare. I don't know what to suggest and it doesn't look like anybody
else having the same problem. Try running DT from Terminal and look for
any errors printed there:
/Applications/darktable.app/Contents/MacOS/darktable

Question about crop was already answered by other users - either you
cropped more than your screen resolution or you're running into limit
set in preferences. Difference to 1.4 might exist in case you have
Retina display, because 1.6 will render in twice the resolution it did
before. Old behaviour can be returned by setting screen_ppd_overwrite
to 1.0 in ~/.config/darktable/darktablerc
