Depends on the version of dt you use (I don't recall you saying).  For
1.6.x you can adjust brightness and contrast using f7, f8, f9, f10.  For
1.7.x make adjustments in ~/.control/darktable/darktable.css copied from
/usr/share/darktable/darktable.css.

hint: for 1.6.x it in the fine manual, it's not ubuntuesssee.
